Like a herbarium sheet turns a living plant into a labelled record, FloraDB turns fuzzy care advice — "bright indirect light," "water when dry" — into machine-readable Lux bands and watering intervals. Every record is graded for confidence, its toxicity is ASPCA-sourced or honestly unknown, and its name links back to GBIF so any fact can be re-verified.

Every name is matched to the GBIF Taxonomic Backbone — canonical accepted names, synonyms preserved (Sansevieria → Dracaena), and a gbif_source_url to re-verify each record.
Dog/cat determinations with clinical ingestion signs. toxicity_status is aspca_verified, conservatively genus_inferred, or unknown — we never guess "safe."
A light category maps to a standard Lux band; watering, temperature, and humidity come from plant-type norms. A care_confidence flag grades every row honestly.

FloraDB is a curated botanical field dataset of over 270 indoor houseplants combining quantitative care parameters (light thresholds in Lux, watering intervals in days, temperature and humidity ranges) with verified ASPCA dog and cat toxicity statuses, clinical symptoms, and GBIF taxonomic citations.
Instead of subjective labels like "medium light" or "water when dry", FloraDB provides exact quantitative ranges: minimum and maximum light requirements in Lux (e.g., 1,500 to 5,000 Lux for Monstera deliciosa) and watering frequency intervals in days based on standard indoor climate profiles.
Yes. Every plant entry is cross-referenced with the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center toxic plant database (aspca_verified), detailing whether the plant is toxic to dogs (is_toxic_to_dogs) or cats (is_toxic_to_cats), alongside specific clinical toxicity symptoms such as oral irritation or cardiac glycoside effects.
The downloadable FloraDB snapshot includes a normalized relational SQLite database file (.db) alongside clean CSV and JSON exports (floradb_sample.csv), ready for direct import into Python pandas, R, SQL pipelines, or modern web applications.
